We lived and worked in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1973. At the time these wild and inaccessible mountains were little visited and without detailed maps.
Part of our time was spent in the Eastern Highlands. Yet, for us, the Mendi District of the Southern Highlands was the most memorable. In this remote area many of the tribes had seen few outsiders of any sort. Their way of life was hardly changed by western influence and we were able to document a civilisation that was obviously going to change very fast.
These pictures are a valuable and, in some cases, unique record of something that we found enthralling and spectacular and which will always remain very much a part of our lives.
