Peter & Georgina Bowater

We are both photographers and have been for over 40 years. It all began in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea in the early 1970s where we were working in agriculture in an environment hardly explored and hardly documented. Our first photographic interest was to record this extraordinarily rewarding subject.  In 2011 nearly 50 of our Papua New Guinea photographs, in large format, were used as the subject of an exhibition on the Grimaldi Forum Esplanade in Monaco.

Arriving back in Europe we set up an advertising studio in Edinburgh. Studio work was more lucrative than absorbing and the beginning of the oil boom in the North Sea offered work much more to our taste. We then began about 15 years of world-wide travel for corporate clients, usually going our separate ways.

Home, gallery and workshop are now in the village of  Châtillon-en-Diois at the foot of Glandasse at the southern end of the Vercors Plateau in France. Our studio at our doorstep is some of the most desirable and fascinating countryside one could hope to find.

We now enjoy the luxury of of being able to photograph the subjects that interest us and to present them in a way that pleases us and, we hope, in a way that will please our clients.

We make the prints ourselves using a Canon large format printer and archival pigment inks. We print on both paper and canvas and frame and stretch some of the work ourselves. Most of our prints are offered in limited editions.

Nearly all our pictures are the result of self-generated projects though some come from the extensive archive of images that we built up during our many years of travel. We are always interested to hear suggestions or ideas for new work or assignments.

Our gallery is open for viewing by appointment and during the village’s Festival Arts & Vigne in August.
